Hexoskin to build world’s largest database of vital signs for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis patients with ICANCME Research Network

Montreal, Canada, August 22, 2019  - The CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) organized a press conference at CHU Sainte-Justine, Mother and Child University Hospital Center today to announce the funding of a five-year project to collect biological and vital signs data from patients suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), to improve medical knowledge of the disease. Canadian Minister of Health, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, was at the event to make the announcement with Dr. Alain Moreau, Scientific Director of the Viscogliosi Laboratory in Molecular Genetics of Musculoskeletal Diseases.

In Canada, over half a million Canadians suffer from ME. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), in the United States, 836,000 to 2.5 million Americans suffer from ME, but most of them have not been diagnosed. There is currently no biological diagnostic test for ME. The disease is diagnosed based on symptoms and by ruling out other conditions that could be causing the symptoms. The CHIR funded project will build the largest long-term cardiopulmonary and activity database in the world for patients with ME.

Our scientific partnership with Hexoskin will be instrumental to address the complexity of ME given its clinical heterogeneity and phenotypic variability overtime. The Hexoskin wearable technologies will allow researchers and clinicians to investigate people severely affected by ME (housebound or bedridden), which is rarely done due to their limited capacity to participate in clinical studies.”

Columbia University Research Measures Impact of Air Pollution on Cyclists in NYC

Commuting by bike is a great way to include physical activity in our day-to-day living. However the impact of air pollution on cyclists is not something that is well understood.

Columbia University researchers Steven Chillrud, Darby Jack, and their colleagues from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory have been using Hexoskin smart shirts and other sensors to collect data on pollution exposure in a real-world settings. This allows them to map pollution exposure around New York city. These maps can be used by cyclists and policy makers to better plan bike paths and bike lanes.

The Free Flight Physiology Project Team in Karakorum, Pakistan is using Hexoskin to monitor their vitals when they fly over the countryside. Dr Matt Wilkes and this team from the Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment Medicine from the Institute of Sport Exercise & Heath (London, UK) are getting their gear ready for the Red Bull paragliding team later this year, but also to conduct serious research on physiology in altitude. They also took amazing pictures and video of their experience!

Paragliding is an air sport that has developed over the last 40 years into one of the most widely practiced forms of free flight. There are an estimated 127,000 active paraglider pilots worldwide.
Flights of over 100km across country are regularly made, using dynamic (soaring) lift and thermal updrafts, with the current open distance record standing at 514km. Paraglider pilots have flown from the summit of Everest, ascended in thermals to over 7,000m and gained as much as 4,526m of altitude in a single flight. (...)
Successful flying requires good physical coordination but is also cognitively demanding, for example: reading the landscape for thermal triggers and calculate glide angles, while remaining sufficiently spatially aware to pilot a craft though an invisible three-dimensional air mass, often containing other gliders in close proximity; in cold, hypoxic, ever-changing and sometimes intimidating conditions. Paragliding has become much safer over time but remains a high-risk pursuit. Most accidents are secondary to errors of piloting or judgement, rather than equipment failure. When accidents do occur, the consequences are often severe or fatal. Understanding the physiological demands on placed on pilots is therefore key to establishing systems to prevent injury or loss of life."

How well do you sleep?

Sleep is a mysterious part of your life, however it's an essential part of your health and performance! When you use the sleep activity in the app, Hexoskin gives you valuable insights about the quality of your night. You can also add a sleep activity after the night, in your account on my.hexoskin.com.

Total sleep time: the US National Sleep Foundation recommends 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night for adults.

Sleep efficiency: % of your night that was spent sleeping.

Sleep latency: time it took for you to fall asleep once you were in your bed. If it takes you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, you should think about what can help you sleep better.

HRV: is a measure of your fatigue level. This can be used to detect overtraining.

The sleep report also tells you how much time you spent on your back and other positions, your minimum and average heart rate, and insights about your REM and non-REM sleep.

Sports Illustrated spotlights Hexoskin's biometric shirt

Tom Taylor gives his thoughts on Hexoskin's smart shirt and what makes it so valuable for coaches and their athletes.

"These shirts are designed to give athletes the same sort of data they could get from a performance lab—for example, heart rate recovery and lung capacity—but in more natural environments and without needing to be hooked up to a machine."

"Since the shirts went on sale in 2013, use by professional athletes has been growing. Several members of the Canadian Olympic team in Sochi last year used Hexoskin shirts, including sisters Justine and Chloé Dufour-Lapointe, who won gold and silver, respectively, in the dual moguls competition. The Brooklyn Nets strength and conditioning coach Dr. Jeremy Bettle also uses the shirts to track his players’ physiology both on and off the court. And Cirque du Soleil even uses Hexoskin to monitor its performers during training."

"According to Fournier, one future use of Hexoskin shirts could be screening for possible concussions in sports. Though the shirts would not provide sufficient data to diagnose a concussion, they could be used to pick up some of the early symptoms, including breathing and heart rate irregularities, allowing team doctors to work out which players might need closer medical attention."
