Hexoskin at the Virtual MedTech Conference: Sessions Explore Everything from Outer Space to the Hospital of the Future

Hexoskin's CEO Pierre-Alexandre Fournier joined astronaut David Saint-Jacques and other panelists this week to discuss innovation in space medicine at the Virtual MedTech Conference.

After 20 years of continuous human presence on the International Space Station, countries from around the world are getting ready to send humans farther into our solar system, beyond Earth's orbit. Technologies required to support long-duration missions, such as to Mars and back to the moon, will be critical to the next 50 years of space exploration.

The Canadian Space Agency, numerous innovative Canadian medical technology companies and the National Research Council of Canada, are performing key research to develop and incorporate novel medical devices solutions for long-duration human spaceflight.

Cutting-edge microgravity research and space-relevant clinical expertise are critical to ensure an autonomous crew health care system. Canadian scientists, clinicians and specialists have developed and demonstrated new devices for remote clinical care including point of care diagnostics and real-time astronaut monitoring.

Among these innovations, Hexoskin has launched the wearable Astroskin Bio-Monitor system to the International Space Station in 2018 to monitor astronaut's vital signs. The system is used since for medical research in micro-gravity but also for research on Earth by a wide community of clinicians working in universities and research centers around the world.

The video of the MedTech Conference panel has been published and is available on the conference platform for attendees here: https://medtechvirtual2020.pathable.co/meetings/virtual/v98noBALBh3R4Xa5e

Celebrating World COPD Day: Actions & Awareness for COPD

Today is COPD day. World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day (COPD) is celebrated on the third Wednesday of November every year, in collaboration with health experts, research foundations and patients with COPD.

COPD is not one single disease but an umbrella term used to describe chronic lung diseases that cause limitations in lung airflow. COPD is a life-threatening disease in advanced cases. It is an under-diagnosed and life-threatening lung disease, leading cause of death in the United States, affecting 16 million Americans and millions more who don’t know they have it.

Help support research and education by giving to the COPD Foundation that undertakes daily initiatives to improve the lives of individuals affected by COPD, and expand care services for COPD. The Foundation’s activities focus on achieving these results through education and advocacy programs and research that will lead to prevention, and someday, a cure for this disease.

Meet Hexoskin at the 34th American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) Annual Meeting in Portland (OR) on September 18-21!

Hexoskin has been working for many years with rehabilitation professionals to provide more insights about patients recovering at home. The 34th American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) Annual Meeting in Portland (OR) on September 18-21 will be another great opportunity to connect with the experts who make rehabilitation easier for patients!

AACVRP is home for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation professionals, where they discuss and promote experiences, challenges, advances and research. We are looking forward to working with a diverse group of heart, respiratory and rehabilitation care specialists to explore new paths to deliver cutting-edge science that keeps patients in the comfort of their home.

The Hexoskin Team will be hosting meetings at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, OregonOur team will be presenting demos of its new clinically validated collection of Smart Garments for remote patient monitoring along with the Hexoskin Connected Health Platformalready used for rehabilitation and health research in cardiology, pulmonology, psychiatry, rare diseases and many other health conditions.

Keep patients at home. Make patients healthier. That's what professionals working in cardiac rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation do. All year long. Hexoskin helps them get data about their patients and answer these questions:

  • how active are my patients?
  • how do their heart/lungs respond to exercise?
  • how compliant are they to their exercise program?

This helps rehabilitation professionals personalize their approach and provide services to patients remotely. Almost every patient should be in a cardiac rehab program after a heart attack. Currently, in the US and Canada, less than 20% of eligible patients participate in a cardiac rehab program. For pulmonary rehab (COPD patients), it's less than 4%! This low participation rate is costing Medicare billions of dollars in additional hospitalization fees. Most importantly, millions of patients are not getting the care that would keep them out of the hospital. We need to make cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation more accessible. That's why we'll be in Portland this week.
